Catch up with Alex in the real world…..[Site news]

Monday, September 8th, 2008

Just some quick announcements about where I am going to be in the next few weeks / months.

I am not one of those people who go to all the travel industry conferences or events as frankly they all seem rather expensive and very time consuming. Even though I don’t go to that many events I still manage to keep on top of what is going on in the online travel industry….. so perhaps events are not that important after all (for the online end of the travel sector)

However, here is my autumn (UK) diary (thats Sept / Oct / Nov to you non UK lot). Having said I don’t go to events…. it does seem rather a long list!

All London….

23rd Sept - in the audience at both TTI autumn conference (called Travel Futures) and in the evening at Travolution question time.

9/10 Oct - Future of Web Apps - this conference is great. If you are in the UK and interested in web applications (like my TourCMS) then this is a conference not to be missed.

28/29 Oct - eCommerce Expo (Olympia) - just going for a wander around. I have also signed up for the Google University event as I had better brush up on my Google knowledge! (not sure which day I am going yet)

11th Nov - Travel Blog Camp - if you are in London for the World Travel Market then come along on the Tuesday evening to a bar in central London and discuss travel blogging and travel social media. It is free but you need to register! (yay!). On the list of people speaking is….. Kevin May (Travolution), Karen Bryan (Europe a la Carte), STA travel (STAtravelbuzz blog) and me (from this blog, obviously). Still spaces left (just checked with Darren).

13th Nov - World Travel Market - I know last year I wrote a blog post saying that the WTM isn’t really relevant to the online end of the market (see post) so I didn’t go. Anyway, this year I will go! The reason is I am on a panel in a seminar called “The latest from Google travel“. This is basically a repeat of this June’s TTI session that took place at ABTA HQ. The format is that there are two industry people (myself and Len Wright from OpenRoads) and a moderator (Paul Richer) - Len is brilliant at asking questions about the mechanics of advertising with Google while I tend to come from the strategic angle. Basically this means Len gets his questions answered while I may be less lucky). However it is great that Google understand the benefit of an open Q&A session at an industry event…. They deserve credit for it. (This is a free entry seminar - not part of one of the “paid for” conferences also taking place at WTM at the same time. Why pay for a conference when you can have Google, Paul, Len and I for free!) - seminar details

I may therefore be in London or at WTM for the 12th so if anyone has any ideas (for meetings, product presentations or something) give me a shout. I want to hear about what you are doing. Might prioritise a few “hello” calls to clients otherwise.

If anyone wants to catch up for a chat on any of these dates then please say so! Probably easier where I am not actually presenting myself, of course. (The entire reason for me posting this list of events was so we can meet for a chat…. so, er, don’t hold back)

Yes - still miffed about the one event I would have gone to where I was not invited but applied to go. They are not answering my emails now either. Never mind.

Have you paid for your ticket? If you are not going to use it - you could give it away as a prize!

    Hi Ronald,
Are you going to be in London at all?

We are based in Southampton….. so actually don’t get into London that much. If you want me to review your site then send me an email. I prefer to review sites that are in English though - if that is possible.

    cheers. Alex
