Is travel industry blogging really a good idea or not?

Friday, August 24th, 2007

Following yesterday’s Travolution feedback regarding our “name the revolutionary” quiz - it made me consider whether public “industry” blogging, as a technology company leader and occasional ecommerce consultant, is really such a good thing.

Either people will think I am a publicity seeking egotist (!) or people may think I have something valuable to say. Some may think that both are true.

Mike Wylie, from Standing Dog (a travel & hospitality marketing company based in Dallas), has a blog on travel ecommerce - however he has stopped posting in the last few months due to concern about publishing client insights and subsequently losing competitive advantage. He has also stopped talking at conferences for the same reason. Here is his post explaining in greater detail his thoughts on this.

On the plus side, Ed Whiting (from Comtec Europe in the UK) has just started a travel ecommerce blog - Travel Remark! . I wonder whether he will take a critical approach to the industry or whether, as a result of Comtec having close relationships with many travel and web companies, he really can say what he wants to say. We will see.

Anyway, working on Mike’s theory that it is mainly competitors that read your blogs….. here is a great list of websites for everyone to go and take a look at - 15 websites for wasting time
