easyJet SMS pre flight text messages “nice but thoughtlessly applied”

Monday, September 24th, 2007

Recently it has been me getting into grief for choosing to express opinions via this blog…. but, hey, I do it in the real world as well - as those of you who know me will agree!

This time its not me but Julian Hucker from esendex who, in a recent blog entry, has called the new SMS text messaging from easyJet “nice but thoughtlessly applied”.

As Travolution reported last month, easyJet (a leading European low cost airline) have launched a system that “updates passengers with information ahead of their departure from the airport”. It is powered by StreamThru who specialise in pre-flight information sent direct to mobile phones.

Julian’s main gripe is that he received a text message at 3 am in the morning - when a better idea would be to send the message the evening before - for flights that leave before 10 am. That seems a reasonable suggestion to me.

It appears that the system is pretty much “off the shelf” hence the timing or logic for the messages is probably down to StreamThru rather than easyJet.

It should be noted of course that Julian runs a competitor system to the one being used for easyJet…. and he has previously pitched his service to airlines….. but his review is worth a read if you are considering implementing a similar system. easyJet SMS review

Also, the suggestions that Julian makes could fairly easily be incorporated in subsequent iterations of the functionality….. because it looks like the service is good in principle - but just needs a little tweaking here or there.
