Travolution over on their blog have just announced some fascinating data on UK travel websites including upstream and downstream sites that are visited from various sources.
Read their blog post that contains the stats
Well worth going and taking a read…..
OK. I can’t afford Hitwise analysis packages …. but I can afford Google Trends (it is free!).
This means you can too.
I thought I would, using Google Trends, analyse Travolution’s website statistics. This could be interesting!
Here are the top 10 sites that visitors to Travolution.co.uk also visit:
Global visitor list

- Musings on Travel Ecommerce - this blog is number 1 !
- Travel Technology Show - Feb event in London
- Jason Roe’s blog – the Ryanair lunatic
- e-Tid – Travel industry news digest
- Travel Weekly – Travel retail news (UK)
- TravelBlogExchange - community of travel bloggers
- TravelMole – ad hoc travel industry news and articles
- Darren’s Travel Rants blog
- TTG – Somewhat like Travel Weekly, but not quite the same, apparently
- EyeForTravel - events and travel industry news etc
Hey that suggests that this is the most visited site for Travolution readers!
UK visitor list

- Travel Technology Show
- e-tid
- Musings on Travel ecommerce – this blog is number 3 !
- TravelWeekly
- TTG
- Jason Roe – the Ryanair lunatic
- TravelMole
- EyeforTravel
- econsultancy – UK digital industry news and analysis
- New Media Age – UK digital industry news and analysis
Who knows if this is accurate or not – frankly it probably isn’t – so just consider this a bit of fun! Still interesting that according to Google (who no one would dare to suggest is ever wrong) if you read Travolution you are, ahead of any other site, also likely to read this blog.
Something for Travolution advertisers to think about

1) Travolution do not have access to Hitwise either – we just have some good contacts in the industry who are happy to provide the data.
2) What is the reporting period for the stats you have reproduced?
3) In the interests of balance, can you reproduce the same charts for TourCMS?
Hi Kevin
Re Hitwise…. well yes. OK!
Reporting period – Google don’t say – but it does appear to be fairly short term – as I check these rankings every so often and they do flex up and down quite a bit. Seems this must have been perhaps the last quarter or similar (due to Jason Roe and Travel Technology Show being there). My blog is on the Travolution list (near the top) most of the time though….
The same chart for TourCMS.com is
1) A Client (tour operator)
2) Travolution.co.uk (you!)
3) TravelTechnologyShow
4) JasonRoe
On the UK list TravelMole also comes up
Problem is our domain serves up all sorts of travel content for customers…. so I am not surprised to see a client appear on the list at number 1
Thanks for the information.
Who is the tour operator client?
The client who comes up on Google trends is a Scotland based mountain bike tour company. Not sure why theirs comes up any more than others!
I’m not sure how much you should read into these stats, particularly where the sites concerned regularly link to each other.
Google also adds its own disclaimer: “Google Trends provides insights into broad search patterns. Please keep in mind that several approximations are used when computing these results. All traffic statistics are estimates.”
Hi Mark
I agree.
The point I was trying to make (although I admit I didn’t clearly state it as such!) was that you don’t have to just pay for Hitwise stats in order to do a bit of back of the envelope analysis.
Even if it is only approximately right the names of the sites that are coming up are those I would expect to see.
OK – will go back to writing about other things (much to Kevin’s relief!)
I have found Google Trends to be much less accurate than compete.com in the US for websites with less than 1M unique. I guess that does not help much for UK sites, but just know that Google Trends in not very accurate for smaller markets / websites.
